Psychotherapy

My decolonial therapeutic style is integrative, eclectic, and intentionally draws from trauma-informed, antiracist, anti-oppressive, and feminist perspectives. I am particularly fascinated with how the present mindset is linked to past situations in my clients’ lives. I aspire to offer more collaborative, didactic, and culturally responsive therapeutic approaches that resonate with my intersectional clients.

I believe that therapy sessions should not begin with clients providing psychoeducation about their cultural values, beliefs, and traditions; instead, the therapist should be listening to the client’s narrative. As such, it is truly about finding a balance between being culturally curious versus clients educating the therapist.

Based on my generative research and applying decolonial practices, I prioritize strengthening the therapeutic alliance and establishing safety and trust with my clients during the initial stages of therapy. I am mindful about cultivating purposeful therapeutic conversation. I meet the client where they are at in the therapeutic process, walk alongside my clients as they unpack their narratives, normalize therapy, incorporate Eastern therapeutic modalities, avoid diagnostic labelling/pathologizing, explore unwelcomed systems, and pose reflective questions.

I have extensive experience supporting clients with mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, all forms of addictions), academic/career counselling, parental alienation syndrome, and reunification therapy. I also specialize in the following therapeutic topics:

  • Acculturation stress
  • Migratory mental health concerns
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Intergenerational trauma
  • Racial trauma
  • Internalized racism
  • Cultural shaming and guilt
  • Cultural and racial discrimination
  • Cross-cultural grief
  • Imposter syndrome
  • Cultural burnout
  • Extended family matters
  • Intergenerational conflict
  • Cultural existential crises
  • Codependency and attachment issues
  • Assertiveness and resiliency training
  • Negotiating cultural boundaries
  • Workplace discrimination and adjustment

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer a consultation to learn more about your services?
Yes! Prior to starting the therapeutic or counselling process in a private practice setting, a variety of questions could be asked by the therapist and client during a complimentary 15–30 minute consultation. This dialogue helps determine therapeutic compatibility and alignment of visions concerning treatment planning.
What can I expect during my first therapy session?
The initial meeting session consists of reviewing and completing forms, gathering the client’s relevant personal information/background history, exploring the presenting issue(s), and collaboratively formulating concrete therapeutic intentions/aspirations. Further therapy sessions will include discussing the necessary steps to overcome the presenting problem(s) or concern(s) and achieve counselling intentions/aspirations. These steps can be quite varied, but often include exploring symptom reduction, changes in behavior or skills, enhanced communication and/or interpersonal skills, improvement in your ability to understand yourself, and the ability to return to work or school. As therapy progresses, your intentions/aspirations may evolve and require further elaboration.
How long is a therapy session?
A typical therapy session is 60 minutes in length. The first 50 minutes involves collaborative therapeutic dialogue; the later 10 minutes will be spent reviewing therapeutic intentions/aspirations and scheduling subsequent sessions.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. I do offer secure video therapy sessions. Sometimes the weather or other issues come up that make it difficult to meet in person, which is where a secure video session can help ensure that there is continuity of care.
What is your fee per therapy session and does insurance cover it?

I offer competitive session rates and have some sliding scale spaces. Most extended health insurance plans will provide some coverage for either therapeutic or counselling services. A receipt will be issued for insurance purposes or to claim on your income tax as a medical expense. Payment in the form of e-transfer (for in-person/telephonic/virtual therapy services) is due at the end of each therapy session. Payments are to be made the same day the session takes place.

Please contact me regarding my fee structure and any questions you may have regarding insurance coverage.

Is there a fee for therapeutic letters?
Therapeutic letters written on your behalf will also be charged at the designated hourly session rate.
What is your cancellation policy?

Your session is reserved for you and will be held unless it is cancelled by voice message or email 24 hours prior to the session time. This advance notice allows the reassignment of that session time to others who may be waiting. If the session is cancelled or missed for any reason without prior notice, payment for the session will be required.

To cancel an appointment, you may email me 24 hours in advance of the appointment.

What if I miss an appointment?
If you miss an appointment and have not given 24 hours notice, then a session fee will be charged.
Are my therapy sessions confidential?

Yes, your therapy sessions are confidential. Everything shared and discussed in your therapy session will be kept confidential except for when there are specific legal, ethical limits, or medical treatment needs as outlined by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). During your first therapy session, a detailed outline of all the practice policies limits to confidentiality will be discussed.
